IN PROGRESS (MAY 2019)
This is where all our full destination guides will be listed… once we’ve written them. So far there’s just one: scuba diving in Tulamben, Bali. We’re very excited about it though.
BUT since you’re here anyway, there are certainly a few other diving / marine tourism places that we’ve personally visited and can thoroughly recommend. We’ll add notes on an ongoing basis while the detailed guides are underway.

White sharks, penguins…
East coast sharks – Byron
Kiwiland is a fantastic marine wildlife hotspot, particularly for marine mammals and birds. As a native, I try to head back every summer for a few months, so there’s plenty of content on the way. Briefly, some recommendations for wildlife and nature lovers would be…
North Island: Fly into Auckland and check out the surrounding area. From downtown (the YMCA provides cheap accommodation) you can head out looking for Bryde’s whales and innumerable common dolphins, with a decent chance of orca and plenty of seabirds. I’d also recommend Tiritiri Matangi Island as a birdwatching trip. I love staying on the Whangaparoa Peninsula (even better for Tiri) or near (Warkworth), from which you can also check out Tawharanui, Shakespear, Leigh. One of the world’s top dive destinations, the Poor Knights Islands, are a short trip north in Tutukaka. Rent a car. There’s lots more to do of course, but if you’ve got less than three weeks I’d then recommend you fly down to the…
South Island: Pick up a rental car in Christchurch and head north to Kaikoura. Whale watching in all the ways, best dolphins, albatross! Walk around the peninsula for seals, admire their moustaches. From there I often head south, regretfully, for a long drive to Twizel for a Mt Cook visit. This is completely unrelated to marine life, but still. Is good mountain. Then out to Oamaru (Dunedin / Peninsula), or down south to Te Anau? If the latter, Milford, then Catlins. Curio Bay. Stop in Pounawea, its lovely. Then up to the peninsula, penguin place, more sea lions, and check out the albatross maybe. Then Orokonui, Shag Point and Katiki, stay in Oamaru. The most boring drive in the country north – do Mt Cook, do WC first? – then Akaroa before you fly out.
